Alex Call went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Wednesday in a loss to the Orioles.

Call’s run-scoring double, which deflected off the glove of Baltimore right fielder Anthony Santander, and probably should’ve been caught, represented the Nationals’ lone run of a rare low-scoring contest at Camden Yards. The 29-year-old outfielder has been on an unexpected hot streak since returning to the majors back in late July, batting .413 (19-for-46) with eight RBI and two steals since the start of August. There isn’t a ton of appeal here for fantasy managers outside of extremely deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats, but he’s definitely locked-in at the dish right now.
DJ Herz

WAS Starting Pitcher #74

DJ Herz gave up two runs over six innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Orioles.

Herz tallied five strikeouts and also issued two walks. He surrendered only four hits with a two-run homer by Gunnar Henderson accounting for all of the damage against him. He’s in line for a favorable home matchup on Tuesday against the Rockies, who historically speaking tend to struggle away from Coors Field.
James Wood

WAS Left Fielder #29

James Wood went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored in a 9-3 win over the Orioles on Tuesday.

There were no home runs, but three of Wood’s hits were 102.5 mph or harder and he seemed locked in at the dish. The rookie is now hitting .283/.369/.449 on the year, and while the home runs haven’t shown up yet like we thought they would, there is little to complain about here. Wood is set for a very bright future.
Andres Chaparro

Andrés Chaparro went 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday.

That’s quite a debut for the 25-year-old who spent eight seasons in the minors working towards this moment. While it’s a great performance from a human interest standpoint, it’s also worth taking note of in fantasy leagues as well. Chaparro got the start at first base on Tuesday and hit .328 with a .977 OPS and 23 homers in Triple-A this season, so there is some juice in his bat and he’s likely going to get plenty of chances to show it off at the big league level. He’s worth a look in deeper formats right now.
Jake Irvin

WAS Starting Pitcher #27

Jake Irvin allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday.

Irvin also struck out three and walked one while inducing 10 whiffs on 49 swings for a 20 percent whiff rate and 25 percent CSW. The only extra-base hit he allowed was a solo home run to Anthony Santander in the third inning as Irvin kept the Orioles off the barrel of the bat for much of the evening. He’ll now take a 3.72 ERA into a matchup in Philadelphia. He should be left on fantasy benches for that one outside of the deepest formats.
CJ Abrams

CJ Abrams (back) is in the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Orioles.

Abrams is back in Washington’s lineup following a three-game absence due to upper back tightness. Back issues can be notoriously tricky matters, but there’s optimism that the extra time off will allow the 23-year-old speedster to put the issue to bed. We’ll see.
Jose Tena

WAS Shortstop #8

José Tena (thumb) is absent from the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Orioles.

Tena remains out of Washington’s lineup following an early exit from Sunday’s game due to a right thumb injury. X-rays came back negative and Nationals manager Davey Martinez told reporters he thinks the 23-year-old rookie, who is dealing specifically with a fingernail injury, will be ready to return at some point this week.
Andres Chaparro

WAS Third Baseman

Nationals selected the contract of INF Andrés Chaparro from Triple-A Rochester.

Chaparro has put up big numbers in Triple-A this year with a .328 average, .977 OPS and 23 homers, and the 25-year-old will now have a chance to show if he can have that translate to MLB success. With the Nationals out of contention he should be given a chance, but there’s reason to doubt he carries over these numbers to the highest level.
Orlando Ribalta

WAS Relief Pitcher

Nationals selected the contract of RHP Orlando Ribalta from Triple-A Rochester.

Ribalta made 25 appearances for Triple-A Rochester with a 3.62 ERA and 35/14 K/BB over 27 1/3 innings. The right-hander will be a middle-inning option with the Nationals, and he’ll make his MLB debut if/when he makes an appearance while with the club.
Jordan Weems

WAS Relief Pitcher #51

Nationals designated RHP Jordan Weems for assignment.

Weems is getting the boot for Orlando Ribalta, with Ribalta having his contract selected in the corresponding transaction. Weems was awful in 2024, and the 31-year-old just came off the injured list after missing two weeks with shin splints. There might not be much of a market here.
