Joel Embiid finished Thursday’s 95-91 win over Serbia with 19 points (8-of-11 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), four rebounds, two assists, one block, and two 3-pointers in 27 minutes.

Thursday’s game was the best of the Paris Olympics for Embiid, who has continued to get booed by French fans every time he touches the basketball. While there were some rebounding mishaps, the 76ers center made some big shots as the United States completed its rally in the fourth quarter. Things won’t get any easier for Embiid, as he’ll have to deal with France’s Victor Wembanyama in the gold medal game on Saturday. The fact that he could play 27 minutes after dealing with ankle discomfort during the quarterfinal win over Brazil was good news for anyone concerned about Embiid’s health.

According to a report from the Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, Joel Embiid told Steve Kerr that he was suffering with ankle discomfort during halftime of Team USA’s Tuesday meeting with Brazil.

Embiid scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in the first half before sitting for the final two quarters. It’s unclear whether his discomfort will affect his playing time against Serbia in the next round.

Joel Embiid finished with 15 points (6-of-14 FGs), three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one 3-pointer against Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Embiid has been ineffective for most of the Olympics, and he didn’t see the floor at all against South Sudan. That was more of a personnel decision based on matchups than a true benching, according to Steve Kerr. He returned to the starting unit for this game and had his best game in a Team USA jersey. If they’re able to rely on him more, the former MVP should be able to make a big impact for them as they continue to compete for a gold medal.

Reggie Jackson plans to join the 76ers after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Hornets.

Philly certainly has plenty of depth at point guard now. Tyrese Maxey is the starter, with Jackson, Kyle Lowry and rookie Jared McCain as the other options. It’s unclear what the rotation will look like, but there isn’t enough point guard minutes to go around, which means that these lead guards will have to spend time playing off-ball roles. Outside of Maxey, there won’t be much consistent fantasy value in the backcourt in Philly.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 76ers have signed Jeff Dowtin to a two-way contract.

Dowtin and 76ers coach Nick Nurse have been connected since their time in Toronto, and that will continue into the 2024-25 season. Dowtin played well for the 76ers in summer league and has earned the right to return after joining the team on a two-way in March. Philadelphia has Tyrese Maxey and Kyle Lowry at the point guard position, and first-round pick Jared McCain is also capable of filling that role. Dowtin’s signing will not impact fantasy basketball.

Jeff Dowtin accumulated 17 points (5-of-11 FGs, 6-of-8 FTs), four rebounds, eight assists, one steal, and one 3-pointer in 29 minutes in Monday’s loss to the Blazers.

Dowtin has given the 76ers solid point guard play throughout the summer, likely improving his chances of sticking with the team in some capacity. He won’t be a player to target in fantasy drafts, as the 76ers will have Tyrese Maxey and Kyle Lowry on the roster. However, injuries could put Dowtin in a position to offer streaming value occasionally.
Jared McCain

Jared McCain shot 3-of-16 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line in Monday’s 97-95 loss to Portland, amassing 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, and three 3-pointers in 29 minutes.

McCain hit three 3-pointers but had a rough night shooting the basketball. His three triples came on ten attempts, and he failed to make a shot from inside the arc (0-of-6). McCain played off the ball for most of Monday’s game, which will likely be his role with the 76ers once the games are official. While he can certainly provide catch-and-shoot value, McCain needs to be better at attacking close-outs and finishing around the basket.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 76ers have signed Adem Bona to a four-year contract worth $8 million.

Selected with the 41st overall pick in last month’s draft, Bona could be a steal for the 76ers. While a bit raw offensively, he’s highly active on the boards and is one of the best defenders in this rookie class. With Joel Embiid’s injury history, there will be times when Bona offers credible fantasy value.
Ricky Council IV

PHI Shooting Guard #16

Ricky Council IV finished Saturday’s 94-81 win over Detroit with 24 points (7-of-17 FGs, 9-of-9 FTs), six rebounds, two steals, and one 3-pointer in 30 minutes.

Council did not shoot the ball as well as in the Salt Lake City Summer League, but his overall performance in Las Vegas on Saturday was good. He led the 76ers in scoring while also contributing as a rebounder and defender. Council is on a standard contract for the 2024-25 season, but the goal is to earn the opportunity to crack the rotation. As well as he’s played this summer, 76ers coach Nick Nurse should give Council every chance to make that happen when training camp begins.
KJ Martin

PHI Small Forward #1

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that KJ Martin will return to the 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal.

Martin logged just 12.4 minutes per tilt across 60 appearances for the Clippers and Sixers last season, and he’s not expected to make a major impact for Philly in 2024-25.
