Josh Hader struck out three Rays in two perfect innings to earn a win in a 2-1 win on Wednesday.

Hader did something you don’t see every day, he tied starter Ronel Blanco for the most swings-and-misses in this game with 11 out of the bullpen. He looked like vintage Hader with his dominant two-seam fastball eating up hitters at the top of the strike zone and didn’t let Tampa Bay off the mat even with a ghost runner on base in the 10th inning. Hader has allowed a run just one time in his last 15 appearances.

Jeremy Peña went 1-for-4 with a solo home run on Wednesday against the Rays.

Peña’s solo blast was the only extra-base hit in a game that featured just four hits, period. The homer was his third over the last week as he’s quietly having a strong season with 12 homers, 13 stolen bases, and a .278 batting average. His strikeout rate has fallen for the third consecutive season while his contact rate has risen. This is a quality ball player.

Ronel Blanco was pulled from Wednesday’s start against the Rays after six innings after being hit on the hand by a comebacker.

The 30-year-old hurler had been dealing, needing just 73 pitches to navigate six scoreless innings with only two hits allowed. Had it not been for the comebacker that hit his hand, he surely would have returned for the seventh. Fortunately, X-rays came back negative for any fractures, and it sounds like Blanco should be okay to make his next scheduled start.

Astros signed RHP Glenn Otto to a minor league contract.

The 28-year-old hurler was cut loose by the Padres at the end of July and it took him a couple of weeks to find a new landing spot. Otto holds a 7.63 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and a 19/14 K/BB ratio across 15 1/3 innings in the minor leagues this season. He’ll add some rotation depth for the Astros.

Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Wednesday that Kyle Tucker has made “slow progress, but he’s trending in the right direction”.

The superstar outfielder played some light catch on the field on Wednesday, hit inside the indoor cages and “did a ton of work in the weight room” according to Espada. There’s still no timetable for when he may be ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment, but the fact that he seems to be increasing activity is at least somewhat encouraging.

Forrest Whitley struck out the side in his inning for Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday.

Whitley got to make his major league debut in April, but it was just one appearance, and soon after returning to Triple-A, he was shut down with a sore elbow, costing him seven weeks. Since returning, he’s been excellent, allowing just one earned run and amassing a 22/6 K/BB in 17 2/3 innings. He could get the call next time the Astros have a need in the pen.

Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with a solo homer on Tuesday, powering the Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Rays.

Bregman homered for the fourth consecutive game, and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle by the fifth inning after taking Rays starter Shane Baz deep for his 19th round-tripper of the season, leading Houston to their seventh straight victory. The 30-year-old impending free agent is putting together one of the best sustained stretches of his career over the last few weeks, batting .298 (37-for-124) with nine homers, 18 RBI and one steal over his last 30 games.

Josh Hader fired a perfect ninth inning on Tuesday against the Rays to record his 26th save of the season.

Hader got the call to protect a one-run lead in the final frame and needed just 10 pitches (eight strikes) to slam the door. He struck out Junior Caminero and got José Caballero to pop out before coaxing a game-ending ground out from Josh Lowe. The 30-year-old stopper has converted 26 consecutive saves opportunities in his Astros debut. He’s right there with Emmanuel Clase and Ryan Helsley as the top closers in the fantasy landscape heading towards the end of the season.
Yusei Kikuchi

HOU Starting Pitcher #16

Yusei Kikuchi struck out five and allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings on Tuesday in a win over the Rays.

Kikuchi has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three consecutive starts to accompany a sparkling 24/6 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings for the Astros since being acquired back at the trade deadline from the Blue Jays. The 33-year-old southpaw hasn’t changed a ton since getting to Houston, but reducing his curveball usage, especially against right-handed batters, has really paid off. He’ll aim to keep the momentum going when he squares off against a familiar foe on Monday when he faces the Red Sox at Minute Maid Park.

Astros INF/OF prospect Shay Whitcomb blasted his 25th home run of the season on Tuesday for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros general manager Dana Brown and manager Joe Espada confirmed to reporters earlier this month that Whitcomb has been discussed “multiple times” this year as a potential call-up. That’s yet to happen for the versatile 25-year-old, who holds a sky-high .913 OPS this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He’s going to hit for power once he reaches the majors and his multi-positional versatility could make him an intriguing bench option for fantasy managers in shallow mixed leagues down the road. He’s a name to watch moving forward.
