Seiya Suzuki tripled, walked and scored the Cubs’ lone run in a losing effort against the Guardians on Wednesday evening.

The 29-year-old outfielder smacked a one-out triple off of Alex Cobb in the fourth inning, then trotted home with the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cody Bellinger. That would be the Cubs’ lone tally in the contest. Suzuki finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .266/.338/.476 with 16 homers, 55 RBI and 10 stolen bases on the season.
Jameson Taillon

CHC Starting Pitcher #50

Jameson Taillon wasn’t at his best in Wednesday’s loss to the Guardians, giving up four runs on five hits over his six innings of work.

On the bright side for fantasy managers, he still managed to record six strikeouts while issuing a pair of free passes. After keeping the Guardians at bay through the first three innings, they scratched out a pair of runs in each of the next two frames to take control of the game. Taillon got 12 whiffs on 90 pitches on the night — four of those on his sweeper — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll carry a solid 3.62 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 96/24 K/BB ratio (121 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s showdown against the Tigers.

Nico Hoerner went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and two steals against the Guardians on Tuesday.

After not running much to start the season, Hoerner is now up to 22 steals on the season with eight coming in just 23 games after the All-Star break. Now that Hoerner is getting on base relatively regularly and stealing bases more often, he’s inching closer to approximating the value fantasy managers hoped to get from him on draft day.

Javier Assad allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Guardians.

If you’re a regular reader of our blurbs then you know that this is becoming a trend. This is now three straight starts that Assad has been pulled before finishing the fifth inning despite solid performances. On Tuesday, Assad wasn’t giving up damage, but he also wasn’t able to miss many bats with just two whiffs on 31 swings for a six percent whiff rate and 22 percent CSW. He’ll look to finally go five innings again in a good matchup against the Tigers next week.

Ian Happ slugged his 20th home run of the season on Monday in a loss to the Guardians.

Happ celebrated his birthday in style by homering and also recording multiple outfield assists in this one. He also walked three times, reaching base safely in four of his five plate appearances out of the leadoff spot. The 30-year-old is on pace to set a new career-high mark in the over-the-fence pop department and remains a solid-yet-unspectacular fantasy contributor.

CHC Starting Pitcher #18

Shota Imanaga was charged with seven runs (three earned) over five innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Guardians.

Amazingly, Imanaga wound up only being charged with three earned runs as all of the damage against him in the fourth inning came after a one-out fielding error by third baseman Isaac Paredes. The 30-year-old lefty was haunted by the long ball in this one as he served up a solo shot to Jhonkensy Noel in the fourth inning and a two-run dinger to Steven Kwan in the ensuing frame. He finished with just three strikeouts and only issued one walk. He’ll bring a stellar 3.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 131/19 K/BB ratio across 128 1/3 innings (22 starts) into a home outing on Sunday against the free-falling Blue Jays.
Ben Brown

CHC Starting Pitcher #32

Ben Brown, who has already missed two months with a neck strain, has been shut down from throwing.

It never appeared as though the injury would linger this long, but Brown still isn’t right, putting the rest of his season in doubt. At this point, if he is able to make it back, it would probably be as a reliever.
Hector Neris

CHC Relief Pitcher #51

Héctor Neris fired a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to get a save against the White Sox on Saturday.

Neris committed an error to allow Brooks Baldwin to get on to begin the inning, but he was able to leave the outing unscathed to procure his 17th save of the 2024 campaign. The Hector Neris Experience (patent pending) can be a wild one, but he mostly — emphasis on mostly — gets the job done.
Justin Steele

CHC Starting Pitcher #35

Justin Steele allowed just an unearned run over six innings against the White Sox on Saturday, but he didn’t qualify for a decision.

Steele struck out eight while giving up two walks and six hits in the contest. A strong outing, but one that came with the Cubs providing just one run of support while he was in the contest. Steele has shown his 2023 season was no fluke, and he now has a 3.18 ERA and 112/31 K/BB on the season for his efforts. He will be back on the bump next Saturday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Kyle McGowin

FA Relief Pitcher #61

Cubs released RHP Kyle McGowin.

McGowin last appeared in the big leagues back in 2021 when he made a career-high 27 relief appearances for the Nationals. The 32-year-old righty signed a minor league pact with the Cubs back in early May after a stint with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the independent Atlantic League
